En 732 Charles Martel, le Duc des Francs, a défendu la citadelle de Poitiers, arrêtant à cet endroit les armées arabes, venues de l’Afrique du Nord en passant par la péninsule ibérique et jusqu’à cette cité improbable dans le nord-ouest de la France. Ainsi s’est fait la première série de contacts entre le Monde Arabe et l’Europe dans le cadre de l’expansion de l’islam. Une coexistence pacifique plusieurs fois séculaire entre chrétiens, musulmans et juifs s’est poursuivie en Andalousie, tandis que la France a connu des rapports plus conflictuels entre ces différentes communautés depuis cette époque et jusqu’à nos jours. Avec des hauts et des bas.
Plus de 12 siècles plus tard, je me suis retrouvé à mon tour sur les hauteurs de Poitiers. Au mois de novembre 2010 je me rendais dans cette cité historique. Lieu antique, décor nouveau. C’était à la Médiathèque François-Mitterrand, à l’occasion d’une table ronde d’historiens et d’architectes – français et étrangers – sous le thème « Architecture de mémoire ». J’étais content de venir en train de Paris avec ma collègue Marie-Laure. Arrivé largement en avance, on a décidé de s’attabler dans un café à proximité de la salle avant de nous présenter aux responsables de cet événement. Seuls, nous étions tranquilles. Quand on arrive sur site trop en avance, les responsables nous bombardent toujours avec mille et une questions, demandent si on a bien reçu toute la documentation, nous demande de faire des essaies techniques dans la cabine d’interprètes, etc. Ils sont tellement anxieux du bon déroulement de l’activité qu’ils ne nous laissent pas vivre notre vie, même à une heure bien avant celle pour laquelle nos services sont requis selon le bon de commande. Mais dans un bistrot en ville – à vue d’œil de la salle – on pouvait prendre un pot, discuter et se détendre un peu avant d’aller au charbon.
Quand on voyage pour une mission d’interprétariat – surtout quand on passe une ou plusieurs nuits dans un hôtel – on apporte toujours le nécessaire au cas où. Des vêtements de rechange, un parapluie, de l’aspirine en cas de maux de tête, de la lecture pour ne pas s’ennuyer le soir, du fil et une aiguille s’il faut recoudre un bouton, etc. D’habitude on n’a jamais besoin de tout ça mais en déplacement on ne sait jamais alors on essaie de tout prévoir.
Marie-Laure et moi, on regarde notre montre et on se dit qu’il est à peu près temps de s’aventurer vers la salle. Alors je me lève pour régler notre consommation et ma collègue me regarde avec horreur, disant « Richard, tu ne peux pas entrer dans la salle comme ça ! ». Ne savant pas de quoi elle parlait je lui ai demandé ce qui n’allait pas. Elle pointe son doigt vers le blason que je porte. En effet, un bout de tissu pendait, visible lorsque je me tenais debout. Heureusement il ne provenant pas de l’extérieur du vêtement mais bien de la bordure intérieure. J’avais bien un fil et une aiguille dans ma valise à l’hôtel, mais nous étions à deux pas de la salle et c’était l’heure de se présenter au client ! Je demande sans grand espoir à Marie-Laure si elle n’aurait pas un fil et une aiguille dans son sac à main, à côté de son jeu de maquillage. Des femmes en ont parfois dans leur sac. Pas de bol, elle n’en avait pas.
Puis soudain la solution me vient à l’esprit. Je suis Juif, militant, président d’honneur et fondateur d’une association qui s’appelle Union Juive Française pour la Paix. Comme le nom le sous-entend, on milite pour une paix juste au Proche-Orient entre Israéliens et Palestiniens. Dans le train vers Poitiers – tout comme dans le métro parisien – je portais sur mon manteau un badge éditée par l’association. Il affiche un seul mot – « Paix » – écrit en hébreu, en français et en arabe. Heureusement mon pauvre cerveau fonctionnait ce jour-là sans trop de lenteur. J’ai sorti le badge de mon sac et je l’ai mis sur mon blason. Non, pas à l’extérieur, mais du côté intérieur. J’ai utilisé l’épingle du badge pour tenir le bout de tissu honteux sur le côté intérieur de la poche du blason. Rien ne paraissait à l’extérieur et surtout rien ne pendait de mon costume quand je me suis mis debout. C’est ce qu’on appelle rester debout face à l’adversité. J’étais sauvé ce jour-là par la Paix.

The social services now available to Russian workers (especially retirement rights) are rock bottom. And the level of corruption is high. As for Putin, he’s a ruthless dictator with a lot of blood on his hands. If you had to compare him to anyone in recent Russian history it would be Stalin, and that’s nothing to be proud of. If there’s anything currently reminiscent of the USSR it’s the Russian vaccine against Covid-19. The Russian scientific and medical acadamies are amongst the best in the world, which may very well be a heritage of excellence from the Soviet period. Anyway, I liked Yuri Gagarin a lot more than I liked Stalin or Putin.
