L’interprétariat et la traduction, c’est comme dans beaucoup de secteurs économiques : le début décembre est souvent une période faste avec les fêtes de fin d’année, la prime du 13ème mois, les cadeaux, les repas en famille, les repas collectifs dans les entreprises, les vacances d’hiver dans des stations de ski, etc. Les bourses se délissent et on dépense sans compter. Les traiteurs, les restaurateurs, les hôteliers, les fabricants de jouets, les producteurs de huitres, de foie gras, de bons vins, tout comme les grands magasins : ils font une partie importante de leur chiffre d’affaires au mois de décembre. Outre les activités autour des fêtes proprement dites, les entreprises essaient de boucler leurs commandes avant le 31 décembre, sachant qu’ils ne risquent pas d’initier des démarches pour de nouveaux contrats avec leurs fournisseurs ou leurs grands clients avant la fin de l’année. La frénésie des cadeaux est suivie par le réveillon de Noël, suivi par des vacances au ski pour ceux qui ont les moyens de se le permettre, suivie par le réveillon du Jour de l’An. Ensuite, tout le monde se réveille avec une gueule de bois en janvier où les bourses sont vides mais on se souhaite quand même une bonne année. Le travail reprend péniblement le 2 janvier et les salariés, moitié endormis, moitié saouls pour une partie d’entre eux, reprennent le boulot sans beaucoup d’enthousiasme. Et le chiffre d’affaires de beaucoup d’entreprises notamment dans le commerce, dans l’hôtellerie, dans la restauration, dans l’industrie touristique en général et dans le secteur publicitaire accuse une chute libre. Leurs clients habituels n’ont ni la trésorerie, ni la motivation pour se lancer dans de grandes dépenses. En décembre, ce sont les fêtes. En janvier, ce sont les vaches maigres.

Comme beaucoup d’autres, les traducteurs et les interprètes suivent cette courbe annuelle. Une partie non négligeable de la traduction découle de la publicité. Après les dépenses publicitaires de décembre, les entreprises mettent la pédale douce en janvier. Et une partie non négligeable de l’interprétariat, ce sont les assemblées générales annuelles des actionnaires, des salons professionnels, des voyages d’affaires et des congrès internationaux. Bon nombre de ces événements se déroulent dans le deuxième semestre entre la rentrée de septembre et les fêtes de fin d’année. Rendu en janvier, les entrepreneurs soufflent un peu, font le bilan de l’exercice précédente, compte leurs sous (ou leurs dettes), supplient leur banquier pour de meilleurs conditions de crédit dans l’année à venir et sursoient sur de nouvelles dépenses avant que l’expert comptable ou le commissaire des comptes leur explique l’état réelle des finances de la société. Alors en janvier, les missions d’interprétariat, il y en a moins.

Ainsi, quand le téléphone a sonné chez moi au mois de janvier 2008 – l’année du crash boursier – j’étais content. À l’autre bout du fil il y avait un client dans le département de l’Eure-et-Loir qui avait besoin des services d’un interprète. Cela est bien tombé car mon compte bancaire commençait à toucher le fond. L’entrepôt pour lequel je devais travailler est situé dans le village de Brou, près de Chartres. Seulement, ce n’était pas dans la ville de Chartres elle-même et il n’y a pas de train qui passe dans la commune en question. Alors pour moi, c’était le métro jusqu’à la gare Montparnasse, le train jusqu’à Chartres et un taxi jusqu’à l’entrepôt, situé une quarantaine de kilomètres plus loin. Ainsi soit-il. J’ai cité mon prix, le client était d’accord et le contrat était bouclé. Mais pas avant que le patron m’explique ce qu’il lui fallait vraiment comme prestation de service.

Pour commencer il lui fallait une personne capable d’assurer l’interprétariat consécutif français-anglais pour une réunion de salariés à l’occasion de la sortie du catalogue 2008 de la gamme de produits de l’entreprise. Jusque là, pas de problème. N’importe quel interprète expérimenté peut le faire les yeux bandés. Ensuite – et le client a insisté lourdement – il faut que ce soit fait dans la joie et la bonne humeur car ce n’était pas une réunion comme une autre. C’était plutôt une occasion de détente, presqu’une soirée festive. Banco ! Il me paie pour faire la fête ; que demande le peuple ?

Je me suis néanmoins rendu sur site vêtu de mon uniforme protocolaire car c’est quand même une prestation en entreprise et on ne sait jamais. Une fois sur place, dès que j’ai laissé mon manteau au vestiaire, la personne qui m’a accueilli m’a regardé avec un petit sourire aux lèvres pour dire que je me suis donné beaucoup de mal pour rien. Je pouvais enlever mon blason et ma cravate. La détente était le maître mot. Je n’ai pas résisté à cette invitation d’exercer mon art dans une tenue plus décontractée. Premières paroles de la cérémonie, premières phrases interprétées vers l’anglais pour le partenaire britannique présent. Ainsi de suite, pendant toute la durée des réjouissances, qui étaient filmées pour fins de produire un vidéo d’entreprise. Pourquoi pas ? Sauf que le patron est devenu de plus en plus insistant. Il fallait que j’affiche un beau sourire aux lèvres. Je ne faisais pas la grimace mais je ne portais pas non plus de masque de théâtre comme si on était au Carnaval de Venise, ni ne jouais-je un rôle comme si j’étais un comédien sur le tournage d’un film.

Des discours on est passé à des jeux interactifs entre salariées. Que de plaisir, le tout interprété en anglais au fur et à mesure. Quand, à ma grande surprise, est venu mon tour de participer aux jeux de rôles. Cette partie de ma « prestation » n’était pas indiquée sur le bon de commande, ni précisée en amont. Mais bon joueur, je m’y suis prêté, tout en assurant les services d’interprétariat en même temps. Quand un cadre m’a regardé de travers pour ne pas m’être plongé dans le jeu de rôle avec autant d’enthousiasme que les salariés, je lui ai demandé ce qu’il cherchait vraiment : un interprète ou un intermittent du spectacle ? À la rigueur j’aurais accepté un tel arrangement – pour le prix d’une mission d’interprétariat classique – si on me l’avait précisé avant d’arriver sur place, ce qui n’était pas le cas. J’aurais même pu me vêtir comme si j’allais à un bal costumé si on me l’avait demandé. Les salariés de la boîte connaissaient parfaitement les lieux mais ils n’étaient plus devant leur bureau ou leur poste de travail dans l’entrepôt. Ils étaient à la fête. Moi – qui devais tout traduire oralement – j’étais plutôt concentré sur l’interprétariat, pas sur un ludique jeu de rôles. Certes les autres faisaient la fête mais moi, j’étais au travail et j’étais la seule personne dans la salle qui l’était vraiment.

À la fin des réjouissances le patron m’a remercié pour mes services, disant qu’il allait quand même régler ma note d’honoraires (encore heureux !). Pour ajouter aussitôt que j’aurais pu laisser mon costume cravate à la maison,  sourire un peu plus pendant la cérémonie et me détendre… Le remerciant pour ses conseils, je l’ai invité à renouveler le contrat avec moi pour d’autres missions. Et dépendant la nature exacte des rencontres (réunions du Comité d’Entreprise ou bouffonneries festives) il avait toujours l’option d’appeler le Syndicat des Intermittents du Spectacle, dont j’étais prêt à lui donner les coordonnées. Son sens de l’humour s’est arrêté net, répondant qu’il ne cherchait pas particulièrement mes conseils. Voilà pour la joie et la bonne humeur. Cet échange un peu acerbe n’était rien de grave. Le plus drôle dans tout ça est ce qui se passe dans la tête de certains patrons. S’ils ne précisent pas exactement ce qu’ils veulent de leurs prestataires de service, comment deviner ? Et cela s’applique logiquement pour les salariés sous leurs ordres. S’ils ne précisent pas exactement ce qu’ils veulent, comment deviner ?     1. Be careful with the web. It has some good articles but it also transmits the worst rumours, including all kinds of fake news and conspiracy theories. Newspapers are more reliable: they’re written by professional journalists.

    1. You’re mistaken. The world wide web is the worst media from which to get news, to the extent that anyone can write on it. Professional journalists of course but also charlatans, crooks, con artists, pedophiles and adepts of all kinds of conspiracy theories. If you want reliable news, you’d best listen to the electronic press (radio, TV) and especially read newspapers. And learn how to read between the lines.

    1. You’re mikstaken. Firstly, it’s not at all complicated to listen to news on TV; it’s a lot easier than reading a daily newspaper (which you should do anyway). Using the web as a source of information is unrealiable. There is as much fake news, conspiracy theories, con artists, criminal networks, pedophile sites and jihadist propaganda on the web as there is serious journalism. You should watch the news and read the papers, which doesn’t exclude the possibility of a few good websites (but you have to be sure of their quality). The « newest news »as you say isn’t always the most reliable news.
